Fourth Quarter Focus: Unity in the Community, Help Those in Need!

“Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.  Honor one another above yourselves.” – Romans 12:10

It’s the same old record but in a different form.  It’s a CD this time, not a cassette tape.  When we will we get it?  We can’t win this thing alone.  I’ve seen organization after organization die because the leaders would rather run their small group than to merge together and create a larger, more effective group.  There’s strength in numbers.

It all started with our search for significance and the need to feel important.  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called it the “drum major instinct.”  He said in a speech that folks struggle with the “I must be out front; I must be first.”

No one wants to follow.  Everyone wants to lead.  Eventually you have a group of folks who all want to be leaders and then the thing dies because no one is working on the vision.  Would we rather have a small piece of something or all of nothing?  Collaboration works.  Strategic alliances are powerful.

If we take the advice Jesus left in his Word, African Americans would not still be struggling today.  I see so many people hoarding information and competing over crumbs that the real goal is lost.  Jealousy is deadly.  No one wins.  We must learn to work together and quit drinking “hater-aide” and eating “hater tots.”

I’m like this:  If I know your lane, I will try to help you.  I won’t try to run in you lane.  I will not reinvent a wheel and try to claim it was my idea.  That’s dumb.  If I see a need that is not being met and I feel strongly about it, I’ll create something.  But if I see that need being met by another group, I will help that group or give them resources to do what they do best.

Giving instead of draining is what is important to me.

The point is really not about how I’m perceived but how the overall mission and purpose is accomplished.

We’ve got to check our motives constantly.  That’s why the psalmist David said; “Search me, O God, and know my heart, and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:24).   Wicked means selfish, self-absorbed and trying to be self important.  We know we’re God’s children and that should be enough.  When we try to impress others – that’s when we lose our focus and destroy the purpose of very meaningful movements and organizations.

God has created each of us with a specific purpose. My flavor is not like yours – but they’re all needed in the cornucopia of life.  There are oodles of things we can do.  There’s a lot of our community needs.  We don’t need to split hairs.  God – not egos – should drive our mission in life.  When we’re in a race, it shouldn’t matter who is going to cross the line and break the ribbon, but what part you played on the winning team.

Be the runner that passes the baton to the next runner – not the one who makes the team lose because you’re focusing on the wrong things.

Unconditional: The Most Moving Movie of the Year!

Unconditional Now In Theaters!

Looking for some inspiration this weekend? Then head to the movies and experience UNCONDITIONAL as it opens in theaters across the United States!
Bishop Neil Ellis says, "UNCONDITIONAL is a movie that will remind you that there is enough love to go around. All you have to do is share it."
Bestselling author Ron Hall (Same Kind of Different As Me) says, "UNCONDITIONAL tells a beautiful story that reminds me afresh of the powerful impact of reaching out to help another."
Pastor Hart Ramsey says, "UNCONDITIONAL is incredible. I was moved and surprised by this powerful film."
October Baby co-director Jon Erwin says, "UNCONDITIONAL plays out beautifully on the big screen - and in your heart. See this movie and be inspired to make a difference."

As an independent film, UNCONDITIONAL is limited in the number of theaters in which it can open. Yet a strong opening weekend will allow the movie’s impact to expand into more theaters in more cities. If it’s playing near you, make plans to see and support the movie. If it’s not, encourage your friends in towns where it is playing to see it this weekend.

Portia said it was "Awesome!"

Breaking The Poverty Cycle by Rose Grant

THE POOR IS EVERYONE'S PROBLEM. BUT GOD...

A while back the ABC News reported a weeklong series centered around “economic obesity” where the focal point was on America’s Fattest City—Detroit. The news coverage profiled our city as a city where some families are grappling with socioeconomic conditions that directly links poverty to obesity.

Many families living below the poverty line ($18,800 per year for a family of four), with very little to spend on food, are hard pressed to find a full-service grocery store in their poor neighborhoods which are usually lined with an abundance of fast-food restaurants offering $ menus.

It is cost-effective for someone who is “economically challenged” to purchase 5 fried McChicken sandwiches for $5 vs purchasing one salad for $4.

No wonder studies show that there is a higher chance of being obese if you live below the poverty line.

Obesity is not the only social ill borne out of poverty. The number one cause of divorce stems from money problems. Broken relationships, crime, debt, misery, depression and low self-esteem are just a few of the social ills that are linked to poverty.

Today’s working poor are caught in a vicious cycle of living a life which is lacking resources for reasonably comfortable living and convenient means.

How do you Break the Cycle of Poverty and change your economic destiny?

Breaking this vicious cycle of generational curse of the ravishing spirit of poverty starts with:

Step 1: Become rooted in the truth that it is not God’s will for us to be poor and humble. Before the foundations of this world God’s will was and still is today and forevermore—that His children, be wealthy and humble.

Step 2: Recognize that poverty is a spirit which seeks to steal your joy, kill your hope in God, and destroy your life. God has given us dominion and power over everything in the earth including the spirit of poverty.

Make a decision today to take authority over poor living conditions by boldly proclaiming “I break the power of poverty in my life. Poverty does not belong to me. I release God’s abundance and financial increase into my life. From this day forth I will no longer be poor!”

Meditate on the fact that God sent Jesus so that you can have life and life more abundantly (John 10:10). This is a life as God has it. A life that is super-abundant in quantity and supreme in quality.

Step 3: Use the success manual. Use the word of God to renew your mind and change your situation. God sent His Word to heal you and deliver you from destructions— poverty included (Psalm 107:20).
God’s Word has enough power to take you from defeat to victory, from lack into abundance and make you whole, where you have nothing missing and nothing broken in your life.

Step 4: Work! For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus that we may do those good works which God predestined/planned beforehand (Ephesians 2:10).

God created us to work not just to have a job. When you are passionate/excited about your work, you will make a distinctive contribution, which leads to higher wages. Find out and do the works God created you to do so you can live the good life, which He prearranged and made ready for you to live.

Step 5: Develop a Prosperous attitude. Look beyond your own limitations and begin to see yourself as being prosperous in God. It’s not about you, your background, your intelligence or lack thereof.

It’s about a God who specializes in the impossible.

It’s about a God who can do exceeding, abundantly above all you can ask or think. Begin to alter your life by altering your attitude towards wealth and prosperity because God wants to prosper you.
